Lore / Moons & Titans
moons
For centuries, astronomers have gazed up at Earth’s hundred satellite moons, not know their true nature: vessels used by an alien race to enter stasis and escape their sundering homeworld. They fled the Uspir Singularity: a writhing, corrupted celestial anomaly which emanates dark matter and consumes all within reach. Portals to the singularity crop up like weeds, disgorging vile entities that dog the titans’ steps. To quell these leaks, the titans have buried portals within huge cauldron moons or even within their own bodies, though the corruption always lingers beneath the surface, threatening to emerge.
In the centuries since, the moons arrived at Earth and lay dormant, until an errant cosmonaut triggered their awakening. Their attempts to broker peace were nearly shattered by Caliborn: an imprisoned ur-titan whose psychic reach allowed him to enthrall many of his waking fellows. A civil war erupted and spread to consume the Earth below, though Caliborn’s influence was ultimately broken — and his soldiers freed to live with the fallout of their unwitting actions.
Though many moons remain in the sky, dozens more fell during the Wars. It took a joint effort by every nation to avert destruction and break up the moonfalls as they descended. The remnants of these shattered moons now litter Restless Zones across the world. Some still contain sleeping titans, miniature cities, or sealed relics amidst the ruins — making them an irresistible lure for treasure hunters.
Titans
Though their home is a distant memory, the titan race has adapted well to Earth. Delicate creatures, they shield themselves within rocky shells of white stone. Titans wield their latent psychic talents for a variety of uses, most commonly to “see” from behind the iron masks they wear to shield their eyes and amplify their thoughts.
In the years since Moonfall, titans have endeavored to integrate and explore. Some maintain cities on the remaining moons, or establish new cities in the lunar ruins scattered across the world. Those who merge with human society often shoulder the stigma of alien invaders — even though many titans fought alongside Earth, and the ones that did not were often unwilling thralls.
This hesitancy, this arms-length welcome, has made the titans restless in their new home. They often become nomadic, more eager than most to ditch society for the unknown expanse of the Restless Zones.
